Last month, I had the privilege of speaking with Diana Clement from the New Zealand Herald.

Her article, "Don't give your power away: How women can take charge of their futures," captured the reality many women in Aotearoa and across the globe face.

We highlighted the persistent financial inequities here in New Zealand. On average, women retire with 25% less than men, and our KiwiSaver balances trail by 36%. These figures aren’t just statistics, they reflect the cumulative impact of unpaid caregiving, part-time work, and the unwinding of government policies that once supported pay equity.

Māori and Pasifika women are disproportionately affected, facing lower wages, limited access to financial education, and reduced intergenerational wealth. The motherhood penalty and workplace cultures that undervalue women only deepen these challenges.

When Diana asked how we can support women with their financial wellbeing, we emphasised two of the most powerful tools we have - conversation and collaboration.

We need to talk about money openly and often. Whether it’s at work, at home, or with friends, these conversations help us understand what we should be earning, spending, and investing. That’s why we created conversation starter cards to help women build confidence.

Financial confidence is essential. Too often, women leave financial decisions to their partners, which can leave them vulnerable. We must take control, educate ourselves, and seek advice. Whether it’s through a mentor, a book, or an online course, the resources are there.

By speaking up, seeking knowledge, collaborating on impactful initiatives and supporting one another, we can close the gap and secure our financial futures not just for ourselves, but for the generations to come.

This discussion was a great opportunity to highlight to Diana, encouraging her to share with her readers, the many great initiatives being led, or supported by, our FSC Empower Women members.
