Workplace Savings End of Year Functions 2026

The FSC and Workplace Savings Committee will be delighted if you could join us at this year's Workplace Savings End of Year celebrations.

Hosted by the Financial Services Council and Workplace Savings Committee, the Auckland and Wellington events bring together Trustees, Chairs, LITs and service providers to restricted workplace savings schemes.

It’s a chance to reconnect with peers, reflect on the year and hear what’s ahead for workplace savings and retirement outcomes in New Zealand.

We’ll also be joined by NZ Retirement Commissioner David Boyle, FMA’s Subbu Somasundaram who will share their latest perspectives with the group and a 2026 FSC WPS Committee update by David Ireland.

This in-person event is for all Trustees (including Chairs and LITs) and service providers to restricted workplace savings schemes.

David Boyle
Retirement Commissioner, Te Ara Ahunga Ora: Retirement Commission

David Boyle was appointed by the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and began his three-year term on 18 May 2026.

David brings extensive experience across retirement savings, financial wellbeing and public policy, spanning both the public and private sectors. Throughout his career, he has focused on helping New Zealanders build financial security for retirement.

Before his appointment, David was General Manager KiwiSaver at Fisher Funds. Earlier in his career, he was involved in supporting the development of KiwiSaver at ING, contributing to the growth of one of New Zealand’s most important retirement savings initiative.

David has previously worked at Te Ara Ahunga Ora Retirement Commission, where he contributed to initiatives to improve financial wellbeing, supported monitoring of the retirement villages sector, and led the early development of the Sorted in Schools financial education programme.

Outside work, David is passionate about New Zealand music, whether buying records or going to gigs. He is equally committed to improving financial outcomes for all New Zealanders and helping more people take practical steps towards a more secure retirement.

David Ireland
Partner, Dentons New Zealand

David is a partner in Dentons’ banking and financial markets team, which is top ranked for its financial services specialty by Chambers Asia Pacific legal directory, with David also top ranked. David has been involved in advising on the establishment and running of employment-based superannuation schemes since 1992. He chaired Workplace Savings NZ Inc from 2008 to 2012, and was part of the external legal support engaged by MBIE’s predecessor in 2011 and 2012 to assist with the design of the restricted scheme regime under the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013.

David’s longstanding expertise in the regulation of financial services was recognised in 2009 when he was appointed to the Financial Advisers Code Committee, a professional conduct rule making body under the now repealed Financial Advisers Act 2008, with David chairing that Committee from 2012 to 2021. A frequent commentator on anything to do with the regulation of financial services, KiwiSaver and workplace savings schemes, David has been part of the FSC’s workplace savings committee since its inception.

Subbu Somasundaram
Principal Adviser, Investment Management, Financial Markets Authority

Subbu is a CFA Charterholder with a strong passion for regulation, finance, and the investment sector. Currently serving as a Principal Adviser in Investment Management, Subbu specialises in Managed Investment Schemes (MIS), KiwiSaver, and restricted schemes. With over six years of experience in New Zealand’s supervisory and regulatory landscape, he brings expertise and insights into oversight of investment managers.

Prior to this, Subbu was a career regulator at the Reserve Bank of India, where he spent more than five years in prudential supervision supervising banks and non-banks.
