Top 10 sustainable actions at the FSC25 Conference

As part of our continued commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices, we’re pleased to highlight the environmentally focused initiatives integrated into the FSC25 Conference.

Understanding the importance of reducing our carbon footprint, we took significant steps to ensure that our gathering was not only impactful but also eco-friendly.

Held at The Cordis Hotel, Auckland from 10–11 September 2025, here are the top 10 sustainable actions demonstrated at the FSC25 Conference:

1. Energy efficiency

The Cordis Hotel, our conference venue, is powered entirely by renewable energy and features energy-efficient lighting, heating, and cooling systems.

2. Local produce 

Cordis is committed to sourcing seasonal, local produce. Conference dishes featured ethical meats, fresh seafood, and seasonal vegetables. Approximately 80% of the seafood was sustainably sourced from reputable suppliers.

The catering reflected our sustainability values, with locally sourced, seasonal, and organic ingredients. Plant-based options were prominently featured to support environmentally friendly diets.

Wines served were sourced from local winemakers on Waiheke Island.

3. Planting a legacy

Instead of traditional speaker gifts, we planted native trees through Trees That Count on behalf of each speaker. These trees support biodiversity, capture carbon, and contribute to ecosystem restoration across Aotearoa.

Speakers received a digital certificate detailing the impact of their tree - turning appreciation into long-term, measurable change.

4. Dress for Success NZ

Our Charity partner, Dress for Success NZ made a meaningful appearance at the conference, championing both sustainability and social impact.

Their presence provided attendees with an opportunity to contribute to a circular economy by donating gently used professional clothing. This initiative not only helps reduce textile waste but also supports women across Aotearoa by providing them with quality attire for job interviews and employment opportunities.

5. Eco-friendly materials

Biodegradable and recyclable materials were used wherever possible throughout the conference to minimise environmental impact.

Delegate bags were thoughtfully designed using a blend of high-quality polyester and natural jute - combining durability with sustainability. This choice ensured the bags were not only reusable but also aligned with FSC’s commitment to responsible material sourcing.

6. Environmentally responsible merchandise

Goodies included reusable coffee cups, stainless steel or bamboo straws, notepads made from recycled paper, and magazines printed on sustainably sourced, recycled stock.

7. Reducing waste

We minimised waste by using digital ticketing and schedules. Exhibitors used Velcro fabric banners that can be reused, and recycled plastic panels were used for expo countertops.

Furniture, lighting, and power setups were reused across over 1,000 events annually by our supplier. Compostable coffee cups were also used.

8. Mobile app

Replacing the printed handbook, our mobile app offered personalised schedules, access to resources, and features like coffee ordering - reducing paper use and enhancing the attendee experience.

By embracing digital solutions, we were able to align our Conference with our commitment to sustainability, demonstrating that innovation and eco-consciousness can go hand in hand.

9. Commitment to sustainable materials

All paper items, including lanyard cards, certificates, and menus, were printed on Forest Stewardship Council accredited paper, ensuring that they were responsibly sourced.

The rigid signage at the Conference were printed on recyclable coreflute plastic boards, which are recycled after the event and repurposed into fence posts. This initiative not only reduces waste but also supports a circular economy by giving materials a second life. 

10. Excellence in ESG award 

One of the FSC Awards 2025 categories celebrated Excellence in ESG, recognising organisations that integrate ESG practices to reduce their footprint and drive responsible business.

ANZ received the Excellence in ESG Award for its ANZ NZ 2025 Modern Slavery Programme. Their leadership in embedding modern slavery prevention into governance, training, and operations set new standards for ethical practice, demonstrating tangible impact across their workforce, customers, and communities.
