FSC’s Empower Women had the pleasure of collaborating with Wellington Women in Insurance for a networking event on the 27th May 2025.

We were honoured to have Sophia van Zijl, Director and Executive, as well as a member of Global Women, deliver an inspiring speech on the theme of confidence and money, drawing on her own rich experiences.

Sophia believes the way we approach our finances can be a reflection of how we approach our careers and graciously shared the following seven principles on this topic:

  • It’s never just about the money
  • You are the asset
  • Know (and command) your worth
  • Play the long game
  • Prioritise your own portfolio
  • Define “enough”
  • Pay it forward

Sophia emphasised the importance of self-advocacy, investing in your continued development, and uplifting others around you. Her practical tips on ways to put this into practice were invaluable, including: seeking out recommended professional development courses; investing in a confidence-enhancing professional wardrobe; prioritising your personal finances as you would for a business; build a business case when negotiating a role or offer; and, seeking the advice of friends, mentors or former colleagues to identify your key strengths. Know your worth!

Attendees further explored their personal perceptions around money with the FSC’s Money Talk conversation cards, sparking interesting and open conversations around our diverse relationships with money.

As the event concluded, it was evident the group left feeling empowered and equipped with increased confidence to advocate for their worth in the workplace. It was great to see hear such engaging conversations, encouraging us all to prioritise our financial and career journeys not only for the betterment  of ourselves but those we can also uplift around us.
