Insurance 2022 - Outlook for the insurance sector

FSC ran a webinar on Insurance 2022 on 5 April - Outlook for the insurance sector - Building a sustainable and trusted life and health insurance sector.

The life insurance sector in New Zealand is undergoing rapid change and transformation. Good customer outcomes, quality advice, robust systems and processes and the rise and rise of tech are all impacting the sector. In addition COFI, FLSAA, Insurance law reform and the NZIIS proposal will all likely shape and impact the sector.,

This session explored all these issues and more.



Clare Bolingford lead the session with a presentation on the FMA outlook for the industry, we then invited our select group of panelists to discuss the key issues facilitated by Richard Klipin, CEO of FSC.

Speaker bios:

Clare Bolingford
Director of Banking and Insurance, Financial Markets
Clare leads coordination and market engagement for the expected conduct licensing regime of banks and insurers. Clare previously worked for the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK for almost 20 years, most recently as Head of Cross-Cutting Policy and Head of Supervision for Retail Banking Groups. She also spent two years at the UK Treasury, leading capital markets and prudential policy.

Melissa Cantell 
Chief Executive Officer, Fidelity Life
Mel is passionate about insurance making a real difference to people’s lives. She joined Fidelity Life as its Chief Executive Officer in January 2021, and prior to that spent six years at IAG as their Chief Transformation Officer and then Chief Operating Officer. Before falling into insurance, Mel led successful customer-centric transformations at global consumer product companies such as Fonterra and Coca-Cola Amatil. This means she has an interesting (and sometimes challenging!) view of what it really takes for an industry to be customer led.

Richard Taylor
Head of Insurance Management and Corporate Services, Advanced Management Systems Limited (AMS)
Richard has spent over 25 years in the IT industry, developing and delivering solutions both within end user organisations and as a product/solutions provider. He has delivered quality solutions and products across many domains including leading the evolution of AMS's Insurance Management solution. Richard's drive is to deliver excellent customers outcomes deploying innovative, pragmatic and sustainable technology solutions.

David Chamberlain
Actuary, Melville Jessup Weaver
David Chamberlain is an actuary at Melville Jessup Weaver. He has extensive financial services experience amassed from over 30 years in the industry. David’s specialist area is life insurance, but he has very broad experience. He often jokes he started work just before the 1987 crash, but it has only got more exciting since. Career highlights include establishing Kiwi Insurance and being a Director of At Work Insurance Limited, the SOE established to compete following the privatisation of the ACC work account in 1999.
