From Surviving to Thriving: How Dress for Success is empowering women in Aotearoa

From Surviving to Thriving: Sarah's Story

When Sarah walked through the doors of Dress for Success Auckland, she had almost given up believing that life could be different.

After leaving an abusive relationship, she was raising two young children on her own while trying to rebuild her confidence and now find a job to support herself and her two small children. Months without employment had left her questioning her worth. Every job application seemed to end in nothing, and the thought of attending an interview filled her with anxiety. She had no appropriate interview clothing, limited support network, and little belief that an employer would see beyond the difficult chapter she had been living through.

"I didn't just feel unemployed," Sarah said. "I felt invisible."

Then she found Dress for Success, and everything changed

Her journey began with a one-on-one styling appointment. As she looked in the mirror wearing a beautiful interview outfit, she saw something she hadn't recognised for a long time—a capable, confident woman.

But the clothing was only the beginning.

Over the following months, Sarah worked with our Career Centre team to update her CV, practise interview techniques, and develop the confidence to tell her story positively. She attended workshops on communication, confidence and financial wellbeing, while receiving ongoing encouragement from staff and volunteers who believed in her, even when she struggled to believe in herself.

After several interviews, Sarah received an offer for a full-time administration role.

The day she collected her work ready wardrobe, there were tears of joy.

"I walked into my first day feeling like I belonged. Dress for Success didn't just give me clothes—they gave me back my confidence. They reminded me that I still had something valuable to offer."

Today, Sarah has been in her role for more than a year. She has achieved financial independence, moved her family into stable housing, and is able to provide opportunities for her children that once felt out of reach. Her confidence and belief in herself has continued to grow.

When asked what made the biggest difference, her answer was simple:

"Someone believed in me before I believed in myself."
