The evening was a wonderful opportunity to connect before settling in to hear career insights from our panel of leaders: Jo McCauley, CEO of Medical Assurance Society (MAS); Paula ter Brake, CEO of Chubb Life; and Toni Ferrier, former CEO of Marsh.
What became clear from the outset was that all three women had diverse beginnings and, in some cases, non-linear career paths, demonstrating that career success can be achieved regardless of your background.
All three women spoke about the support that had helped uplift them, from managers and executive coaches to family members. Broadening your network beyond your own organisation was also encouraged as a way to expand your perspective, strengthen your professional connections, and create new opportunities.
The role of feedback in growth and development was another key theme, with panellists suggesting that attendees find the equivalent of a "critical friend" who can provide honest, quality feedback.
Leadership style was another topic discussed, with our panellists sharing how they have adapted to different contextual environments and adjusted their approaches accordingly. They emphasised that leadership styles can evolve and that no one is confined to a single style throughout their career.
The panellists were also generous in sharing personal experiences, from navigating setbacks and balancing parenthood with careers through to discussing their views on the gender pay gap.
The role each of us plays in shaping our own future success was another important takeaway. The panel highlighted that we create our own opportunities, regardless of the adversity we may encounter along the way.
In summary, attendees were encouraged to be curious, collaborative, and resilient problem-solvers while trusting in and backing themselves.
